Summary

  • We don’t run analytics, ads, or require an account.

  • The app stores a few preferences locally on your device (e.g., theme, content controls).

  • For stability and controlled rollouts, we use Firebase services (Google): Crashlytics (crash reports and basic diagnostics) and Remote Config (feature flags / configuration updates).

  • VN Browser is intended for adults (18+) only. Mature (18+) content is off by default and can only be enabled after age verification and an in-app confirmation. Image blur is on by default, and turning it off requires an additional confirmation. Age verification is performed on-device and is not stored, collected, or transmitted. The app is not intended for children or minors.

If information about you (as a developer, translator or otherwise) has been included in the database that you're not comfortable with, please contact contact@vndb.org. While we do not (yet) have a formal policy on what kinds of data we alter and/or remove, we do generally try to honor removal requests for sensitive and/or personal information.

Data License

All information on VNDB is made available under the Open Database License. Any rights in individual contents of the database are licensed under the Database Contents License.

With the following exceptions:

If you own the copyright of images or descriptions used on VNDB and do not wish for these to be distributed through the database, please contact contact@vndb.org.

Content Policy
Content Policy

VNDB aims to index and catalogue information about visual novels, including titles that may contain sensitive or potentially offensive themes (such as sexual content, violence, and other mature material). This may be reflected in the database through tags, descriptions, images, and other metadata.
VN Browser does not host illegal content and does not intentionally promote or surface content that may be restricted by applicable law. Laws vary by jurisdiction, and some content may be restricted depending on the user’s country or region.
VN Browser does not provide user accounts or social networking features. VN Browser is intended for adults (18+) only. Some Mature (18+) content is hidden by default and can only be enabled in Settings after on-device age verification and an in-app confirmation. The date of birth is not stored, collected, or transmitted.

Data you provide

We do not collect personal information in the app and we do not operate user accounts.

On-device preferences

The Application stores a small set of settings on your device only (e.g., light/dark mode, 18+ content toggle, blur setting). We do not receive these values.

Diagnostics / Crash reports & Configuration updates (Firebase Crashlytics / Firebase Remote Config)

For stability, debugging, and controlled rollouts, we use Firebase services (Google), which may receive:

Firebase Crashlytics

  • Crash logs and stack traces.

  • Timestamps, app version, and OS version.

  • Device model and a random app-instance identifier.​

Firebase Remote Config

  • Requests to download configuration parameters (feature flags / settings).

  • App version and device/OS information (to deliver compatible config values).

  • A random app-instance identifier and standard request metadata required to provide the service.

This data helps us maintain the Application, fix bugs, and improve reliability. It is not used for advertising or profiling.
Provider policies:

We do not process precise location, contact lists, photos, or microphone data. We do not collect your name, email, or payment info through the Application.

How We Use the Data

  • Diagnose crashes and performance/stability issues.

  • Improve reliability and user experience.

  • Deliver and update configuration/feature flags (e.g., enable/disable features or adjust defaults without requiring a full app update).

We do not sell or rent data.

Legal Bases (EEA/UK)

Our use of diagnostics is based on our legitimate interests in maintaining a secure and stable app. You can stop sending diagnostics by uninstalling the app (see “Your Choices”).​

Sharing of Information

We may share data:

  • With our service providers (e.g., Google/Firebase) under appropriate terms.

  • To comply with law or lawful requests.

  • To protect rights, safety, and security.

We do not share data for advertising purposes.

External Content & Links

VN Browser is an information catalog. It does not host or store visual novels. Content (covers, screenshots, metadata) comes from the Visual Novel Database (VNDB). The app may open official VNDB webpages (including a “report this entry” link) in your browser. Those sites are operated by third parties and have their own privacy policies.

Covers, screenshots, and logos are the property of their respective owners and are shown for informational purposes only. If you are a rights holder and have concerns, please contact us.
Not Affiliated: VN Browser is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by VNDB or any rights holders. Content is provided by VNDB and may vary by region. It may also be subject to legal restrictions depending on your jurisdiction.

Platform Icons / Third-Party Assets

VN Browser uses platform icons from VNDB's public repository (icons/plat).

VN Browser is not affiliated with or endorsed by VNDB. Platform names, logos, and trademarks belong to their respective owners and are used for identification only.

Children

VN Browser is intended for adults (18+) only and is not directed to children or minors. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, please contact us and we will delete it.

Age Rating, Mature Content & Controls (18+)

VN Browser is an information catalog that displays metadata provided by The Visual Novel Database (VNDB). Some entries in VNDB may be labeled as Mature (18+). To help users control this type of material and reduce accidental exposure, VN Browser applies the following restrictions and safeguards.

Mature (18+) content is hidden by default

​

Mature (18+) content is OFF by default. While it is disabled:

​

  • Mature entries are not shown in search results, lists, or discovery sections that could reveal them unintentionally.

  • Mature thumbnails and images are not shown in an unblurred form.

  • The app does not surface mature content through “recent”, “recommended”, or similar UI areas when the setting is off.

Enabling mature (18+) content requires an in-app age verification

Important: VN Browser is intended for adults (18+) only. If you are under 18, do not enable this setting or use the app.

To enable Mature (18+) content, the user must complete an in-app confirmation flow. This flow may include selecting a date of birth using a date picker to verify the user’s age.

This age check is designed to be privacy-preserving:

​

  • On-device verification only: the age verification is performed locally on the user’s device.

  • No storage: the date of birth is not stored by VN Browser after the check is completed.

  • No collection: the date of birth is not collected as an account attribute (VN Browser does not require accounts).

  • No transmission: the date of birth is not transmitted to VNDB or to any external server.

  • No analytics usage: the date of birth is not used for profiling, advertising, or analytics.

The only purpose of the date-of-birth input is to determine whether the user meets the 18+ requirement needed to enable Mature (18+) content within the app.

Image blur is enabled by default

 

To further reduce accidental exposure, VN Browser enables image blur by default for mature-marked images. The user can choose to keep blur enabled or adjust it through in-app controls (for example, within the Content Management area).

 

User control and reversibility​​

​The mature content setting can be turned off at any time. Disabling mature content re-applies the restrictions described above, including removing mature results from lists and preventing mature imagery from being shown unblurred.

Data Retention

  • On-device preferences remain on your device until you clear the app data or uninstall the app.

  • Crash and diagnostic data (Firebase Crashlytics) is retained by Google/Firebase according to their policies and typical diagnostic retention practices.

  • Remote configuration requests and related service data (Firebase Remote Config) are handled and retained by Google/Firebase according to their policies.

Your Choices

  • Uninstall the app to stop all data collection by the Application.

  • Clear the app’s data to remove local preferences on your device.

  • Control OS-level diagnostic sharing in your device settings where available.

Security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures and rely on reputable providers (Google/Firebase) to safeguard data transmitted to them, including crash/diagnostic data (Crashlytics) and configuration service data (Remote Config).

International Transfers

Crash data and configuration service data (Firebase Crashlytics / Firebase Remote Config) processed by Google/Firebase may be stored and processed on servers outside your country. Google implements safeguards described in its privacy documentation.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the new version with the “Effective date” above.
